My grandmother Liss, who inspired many of the recipes you’ll discover on Savvy Soirée, would daily serve a very elaborate dinner (pronounced ‘dinn-Ah’) when the clock struck 12pm, and would offer a light supper (pronounced ‘supp-Ah’) at sunset. This light supper would typically consist of a freshly sliced ham sandwich accompanied with homemade French fries and a bowl of sherbet ice cream for dessert.

Y’all, I’ve glammed up Liss’s ham sandwich, and it’s so divine that I believe she would even serve it for dinn-Ah! This treat is filled with buttery, flaky layers of delicate pastry surrounding shaved ham and a creamy cheese just waiting to melt in your mouth!

While I enjoy serving these as a quick and easy hors d’oeuvre to compliment most dinner parties, they would also make the perfect highlight of any luncheon.

Glammed Up Ham & Cheese Sandwiches

you will need…

  • 1 package of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/4 lb glazed ham, sliced about 1/4″ thick
  • 1/4 lb Gruyere cheese, sliced
  • 1/4 lb Brie, sliced (I prefer to remove the rind)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mayonaise
  • egg wash (mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon water)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, combine Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Line a cookie sheet with a pre-cut baking sheet, and carefully lay one sheet of pastry on top. Thinly brush pastry with the mustard & mayonnaise mixture, leaving 1/2″ on all sides of pastry. Pile ham and cheese slices on top. Brush egg wash on the uncovered pastry edges and top with second sheet of pastry. Using a fork, crimp the edges of the pastry and brush remaining egg wash on top of pastry; the egg wash will make your pastry extra special as it provides a beautiful glaze! Slice 3 slits in the center of the pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake 20-25 minutes until your pastry is golden brown. Once cooled, slice pastry into desired sized triangles. Serve warm or at room temperature. EnJOY!

*Savvy Hint: These glammed up ham & cheese sandwiches are precious served on a popsicle stick and would make a fabulous presentation at a Savvy Kid’s birthday party!

Ham & Cheese Skewers

you will need…

  • 1 package of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/4 lb glazed ham, sliced about 1/4″ thick
  • 1/2 lb cheddar cheese
  • 3 tablespoons mayonaise
  • egg wash (mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon water)
  • popsicle sticks

Think MINI ham & cheese sandwiches when preparing the skewers. Follow instructions above using the kid friendly ingredients, however instead of assembling one large pastry, cut your pastry into 12 small rectangles. Lay your popsicle stick on top of the ham & cheese before assembling the top layer of pastry. Crimp edges of each pastry, and bake about 20 minutes.
